Trump administration opposes Equality Act ‘filled with poison pills’

The Trump administration does not support the Equality Act, which the House is expected to take a vote on Friday. “The Trump administration absolutely opposes discrimination of any kind and supports the equal treatment of all; however, this bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights,” an administration official confirmed to the Washington Examiner. Nearly two decades ago, President Trump said he supported the idea of amending the 1964 Civil Rights Act to prohibit such discrimination. The Equality Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, but it also goes further than what Trump said he supported in 2000 — it would prevent the Religious Freedom Restoration Act from being used to discriminate against the LGBT community.
