The situation for LGBTI people in Senegal continues to deteriorate. Homophobic marches are organized and arrests are carried out against LGBTI people. In August 2020, the Free Collective was created to defend their rights. It set up a secret shelter for persecuted LGBTI people, offered legal aid and medical care, and visited people in prison. Prison Insider spoke to a representative of the Free Collective to learn more about the situation. This is an English translation of a French-language interview by Carolina Nascimento for Prison Insider, a publication whose goal is to share and compare information about prison conditions and human rights worldwide. The interview begins with a question about a now-rejected bill that sought to increase penalties for homosexual activity in Senegal.
