India is set to appoint its first openly gay judge. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended that senior advocate Saurabh Kirpal be elevated to the role of judge to the Delhi High Court, which would make history in the country if approved. However, Kirpal has been passed over for the elevation approximately three times since 2017, according to Business Insider India. “The fact that my partner of 20 years is a person of foreign origin is a security risk is such a specious reason that it leaves one to believe that it is not the whole truth,” Kirpal told the Indian Express in April. “That is why I believe my sexuality is the reason why my candidature has not been considered for elevation as a judge.”
