A Year of Intersex Victories

While 2020 has been a rough year for just about everyone, 2020 has also been a year of many intersex victories and of the overall global advancement of intersex rights. The term “intersex” is an umbrella term that refers to anyone born with variations in their sex characteristics—including variations in their hormones, chromosomes, internal anatomy, and external genitalia. The term “intersex” refers to an entire community of people with over 30 medically recognized intersex variations. While intersex people might have the same diagnosis or similar variations, no two intersex people have the same experience—as intersex people come from all walks of life. Despite the fact that intersex people make up about 2% of the population, which is the same percentage of people born with red hair or green eyes, intersex issues are only just beginning to receive recognition in the mainstream media. As an intersex person myself, seeing the victories that have taken place within the intersex community in the past year alone has been encouraging.
