San Francisco’s oldest gay bar, The Stud, has fallen victim to the coronavirus. “We want to let you know that we are not reopening our location at 399 9th St.,” the bar said in a Facebook post on Wednesday night. One of the historic venue’s co-owners, Honey Mahogany, confirmed the closure in an email. The owners cannot afford to continue paying rent without income, she said. Mahogany said more details about the closure will be announced at a news conference Thursday. The cooperatively owned LGBT venue first opened in 1966, and over the years has featured such queer icons as RuPaul, Lady Gaga and Charo, according to the bar’s website. The bar’s owners sounded a hopeful note when shelter-in-place orders first forced it to temporarily close. “We’ve survived homophobia, anti-gay police violence, earthquakes, riots, eviction, the AIDS epidemic, the dot-com era, and hyper-gentrification,” its website said, “and we’re going to survive this too.”
