Pride 2020, scheduled for February 1, the annual march of LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual) community in the city, the Mumbai Police has denied permission for the event at August Kranti Maidan. As per the official statement of the police, the permission has been denied keeping in mind the political situation prevailing in the city in view of the CAA and NRC protests. An official from the Gamdevi police station informed Mirror Online on Wednesday that the permission for the march was not given keeping in mind the political situation prevailing in the city (and elsewhere), in view of the incessant protests against the CAA and NRC. “We told them that the march could give a chance to others to infiltrate and mingle into the crowd and give it a political colour. That will ruin the very purpose of the march. Moreover, if at all the organisers were keen on taking out the march, they should ensure to keep outsiders at bay, which they failed to submit. Instead they agreed to hold the event at Azad Maidan,” the official said.
