Glam Slam event rolls out welcome mat for Margaret Court

As the organiser of Australia’s biggest LGBTQI tennis tournament, the Glam Slam, Rowen D’Souza finds it useful to be ‘‘a little bit cheeky’’. In November at a function in Perth, he approached tennis legend Margaret Court, who has been widely criticised for her views on LGBTQI issues. Mr D’Souza told her how her words could hurt LGBTQI people, and their participation in tennis. But he also said he envied her forehand, and her speed as a world champion in the 1960s and ’70s. Mrs Court posed for a selfie with him. He didn’t, however, get around to inviting her to the 2020 Glam Slam, which runs from January 30 to February 2. But he’s doing so in this article. He would say to her: “I really think you would enjoy the tennis, the atmosphere and the celebration that is the Glam Slam. It’s about people playing tennis. Come and join us.’’
