A Canadian transgender activist who worked to raise awareness about transphobia was killed in Toronto, Canada’s The Globe and Mail reported. Julie Berman was found by police on Sunday afternoon at a residence in The Annex, a lively neighborhood in downtown Toronto. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her death was treated as suspicious. After an investigation, police arrested 29-year-old Colin Harnack, of Toronto. He was later charged with second-degree murder. Berman, who worked as a hairdresser, was involved for almost 30 years with community events at The 519, a City of Toronto organization that advocates for LGBTQ rights, and provides services for the community.
