Chechen authorities have denied the reports, while the spokesman for leader Ramzan Kadyrov insisted there were no gay people in Chechnya. It follows a report by the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta detailing how homosexuals are being arrested “in connection with their non-traditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such” and taken to “concentration camps." Such camps would be the first centres dedicated to the extermination of sexual minorities since the Nazi death centres which killed millions during the 1940s. It is believed inmates have been tortured with electric currents and beaten by guards trying to identify other members of the gay community in the region.
