In Cuba the community were ostracised from the very beginning of the Cuban revolution in 1959. Those with differing sexual orientations and/or gender identities were seen as ‘sick’ right up until 1979, when homosexuality was finally legalized. While in the UK we often applaud ourselves for our progressive thinking, LGBT communities, especially in Cuba still suffer at the hands of outdated thinking.
