At age 22, Jean-Daniel Ndikumana came out first to his younger brother and sister, who accepted him; but other relatives shunned him. He fled Burundi in 2013 for asylum in Belgium, where he now lives. Ndikumana works for Maison Arc-en-Ciel, an LGBT advocacy group. While in D.C. he met with other LGBT and refugee advocates, lawmakers, and officials with the State Department. Before returning to Europe he also traveling to Portland, Maine to meet with African LGBT asylum seekers who had reached out to him.
