Sham Hasan, a gay former linguist for the U.S. Army, vividly recalls the day he learned the U.S. government had granted him a visa that would allow him to leave Iraq. It was March 25, 2014, when he received a phone call from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Hasan on the same day learned the U.N. Refugee Agency was going to help him leave Iraq.
