The Court of Arbitration for Sport has cancelled several fines imposed by FIFA on the Mexican Football Federation. The fines were issued for homophobic chants from fans at World Cup Qualifying matches in 2015 and 2016. The two fines overturned were for a November 2015 match against El Salvador and a March 2016 match against Canada. A fine for another March 2016 match against Canada was not overturned (presumably because it was also for a pitch invasion.) 35,000 Swiss Francs in fines were cancelled as a part of this ruling. Mexico incurred over 100,000 Swiss Francs in fines for matches after the series of games involved in the appeal. This includes a 10,000 Swiss Franc fine for last month’s final set of qualifiers.
