Gay Unions were legalized in Ecuador with the approval of the government and amended in the Constitution in 2008. In legalizing gay marriage many civil liberties were given to the LGBTI people of Ecuador, but leaves out the possibility of joint adoption. The union has allowed greater access to more civil rights; but the marriage itself, however, remains illegal for people of the same sex.
