More needs to be done to help LGBTI people globally who are facing ‘horrific violations of their human rights’ because of their sexuality or gender identity. A United Nations expert told the UN General Assembly in New York that LGBTI people are ‘suffering a crucible of egregious violations’. Vitit Muntarbhorn is the UN’s first Independent Expert in protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. He took on the role last year and delivered his landmark speech to the General Assembly after he released his first full report on LGBTI issues. ‘It is unconscionable that people with an actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression different from a particular social norm, are targeted for violence and discrimination in many parts of the world,’ Muntarbhorn said in his speech.
